Chess & Backgammon Set by Jaques of London
It was in 1839 when John Jaques recognized the need for a classic yet simple chess design in Chessmen that could be reproduced simply. Until that time the only Chessmen available to the public were either hand-carved, excessively elaborate or often very expensive or rudely turned, daubed pieces in which rank was indicated by height alone. The result was the Staunton pieces that feature in this set.
This polished Mahogany Chess and Backgammon baize-lined cabinet (15” x15”), features an Inlaid decorated Sycamore and Walnut chess board with inlaid backgammon game board on the reverse. The set includes boxwood baized bottom Staunton chessmen and heavyweight backgammon men, dice and shaker cups and comes complete with game rules and cotton bags for the pieces.
Also available with a set of Draughtsmen.
